Tonight, on King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 78th Birthday, we celebrate His four decades of tremendous leadership and commitment to the people of Thailand. Blind to social status or income level, His Majesty has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all people - from the highest-ranking officials to working families.
As I look back on my four years as president of the Thai-American Association, I’ve been continually impressed with the generosity and compassion of our community. Nearly one year ago, we witnessed the worst human tragedy in generations. The impact of the tsunami affected us all, claiming 275,000 lives and causing unimaginable amounts of damage. Our community quickly sprung into action, arranging two fund raising events within a week of the disaster. Together, we raised and personally delivered over $100,000 for the recovery efforts.
I’m also very proud of how we worked together over these last four years to host several major events in the Asian community, including the Asian Festival, the Annual Asian Coalition Dinner, and supported the Thai Taste of Chicago. Together, we raised awareness about the Thai-culture throughout the greater Chicago community. We’ve also expanded our programming, offering legal advice, health care and business discounts, fostering a healthier, stronger community.
I am most proud of the work we’ve done towards the Building Project. Over the past three years, we’ve raised over $40,000 and committed to a long-term campaign to see this project through to the end. I have formed a new committee that will oversee the long-term, as well as the day-to-day operations for the project. I hope we can count your continued support. Together, we can create a place where our children can find a common heritage, community services, and support.
I would like to thank my staff for their tireless efforts and commitment to the Thai-American Association. Without them, none of this would have been possible. Their energy along with the enthusiasm of our members and supporters makes this a vibrant organization.
Finally, I would like to thank our members and various supporters. There have been many instances were our supporter have surprised me by their enthusiasm and generosity. These people make the hard work worthwhile and give the organization momentum.
I extend my congratulations to our next president, Khun Poxie, and wish him the very best as he leads this organization into the future.
Sincerely,
Nanta Buranakanchana
